The average 3% hydrogen peroxide should contain about 3 mg of this chemical for every 100 mg of water. A full liter of water is 1000 grams, and a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide will have close to 30 grams of this chemical in it. The research we will discuss, in this delineation, has shown that you will need approximately 150 mg / L to 3000 mg / L of hydrogen peroxide to effectively inhibit nearly all Candida. Non-albicans species of Candida, can take significantly more hydrogen peroxide to inhibit. Thus, a 3% concentration of hydrogen peroxide is going to be the right strength you’ll need to stop Candida development (30,000 mg / L). But, be careful, hydrogen peroxide can burn the skin and be very, very dangerous if you ingest it (more on this later).

Hydrogen peroxide is a common household chemical that is notably sold in small bottles at a 3% concentration. Specialty retailers may also sell higher concentrations of this chemical—such as 35% hydrogen peroxide solutions. Hydrogen peroxide is, of course, an oxidizing agent; and, is utilized by a number of common products. Chlorine free bleach, household disinfectants, contact lens cleaners, fabric stain fighters, teeth whiteners, and even hair dyes. A very prominent industrial use for this chemical, is using it as a bleaching agent, in the production of pulp and paper. Lactobacillus bacteria can also create hydrogen peroxide; so, adding the right probiotic to your vagina, can allow these bacteria to start churning out this antiseptic chemical automatically.
Hydrogen peroxide is relatively safe to use outside the body; and, should work well when used in the vagina at tolerable concentrations. However, the human body is full of the enzyme catalase. This enzyme is extremely capable of breaking down hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. The excess water in the body, from this reaction, is not that dangerous. Yet, when a large amount of free oxygen molecules are present, this can cause a lot of damage. People who have ingested hydrogen peroxide have suffered brain damage; and, if you drink a good amount, you could be hurt very badly. Food that contains too much hydrogen peroxide can cause food poisoning. So, make sure you NEVER ingest hydrogen peroxide. Keep this chemical away from drastic cuts that may allow this chemical to enter the bloodstream.
A study, published in Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynecology [3.2 (1995): 73-78], sought to see how effective hydrogen peroxide would be at inhibiting Candida strains; and, tried to understand how catalase modified this effect. Catalase, as you know, is an enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide; thus, its presence can limit the inhibiting power of hydrogen peroxide. And, all the strains of Candida investigated by this study, possessed catalase. Bacteria that can produce acid and hydrogen peroxide were also considered as protective agents to ward off vaginal yeast proliferation. Previously, Lactobacilli bacteria, which normally dominate a healthy woman’s vagina, were thought to protect the vagina by producing acid. More recently, it was discovered that some strains of Lactobacilli generate hydrogen peroxide. This is thought to be another reason these bacteria may provide a beneficial effect.
The study found that non-albicans species of Candida had a much higher tolerance for hydrogen peroxide. The researchers reported that non-albicans species had minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC; i.e., the amount of a substance required to stop the growth of a microbe) about 4 times higher than those of Candida albicans. Oddly enough, there was no discernible correlation between each individual strain’s susceptibility to hydrogen peroxide and the amount of catalase measured. The researchers inferred that stable yeast cells might possess enough catalase to break down hydrogen peroxide that forms internally.
Candida’s catalase is not capable of breaking down substantial amounts of hydrogen peroxide outside of its cells. Hydrogen peroxide may be able to damage Candida cells to the point they rupture; and, thus, catalase is released at this point which was stored inside the cells. The major finding of the study, how much H2O2 is needed to stop Candida growth, revealed that all of the 38 strains tested were successfully inhibited by approximately 149.6 mg / L up to 2993.3 mg / L. Again, non-albicans strains, on average, required a higher concentration to inhibit.
Another revealing study, published in The Open Dentistry Journal [4.1 (2010)], also looked at how well hydrogen peroxide would inhibit various species of Candida. The Candida species investigated included C. albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. glabrata, and C. krusei. The study discussed a dental unit water line, and did not say much about yeast. Yet, the minimum inhibitory concentrations for the Candida species were shown. However, some non-albicans species of Candida were dramatically more resistant to hydrogen peroxide, than their cousin Candida albicans. The following concentrations of hydrogen peroxide inhibited their respective yeast species’ strains in the study:
- Candida albicans H2O2 MIC ≈ 400 mg / L
- Candida glabrata H2O2 MIC is over 799 mg / L
- Candida krusei H2O2 MIC ≈ 200 mg / L
- Candida parapsilosis H2O2 MIC is over 799 mg / L
- Candida tropicalis H2O2 MIC ≈ 300 mg / L
The next study also evaluated how well hydrogen peroxide worked at stopping yeast growth. The yeast that was examined by the research was a strain of Candida albicans. This important study was published in the Nigerian Journal of Medicine: Journal of the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria [23.3 (2014): 201-206]. The study used a 35% concentration of H2O2 to see the MIC for Candida albicans. This study also proved that hydrogen peroxide could effectively inhibit Candida albicans.
Cautions for Using Hydrogen Peroxide
A study, published in Toxicological Reviews [23.1 (2004): 51-57], relates the all too real dangers of hydrogen peroxide misuse. According to the study’s authors, hydrogen peroxide causes toxicity in three primary ways: lipid peroxidation (oxidative damage to lipids—and some fats are lipids), damaging tissue via corrosion, and oxygen gas creation. We see, using high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide on sensitive tissues, can result in damage to those areas. Thus, you want to be careful before you use a concentration of hydrogen peroxide above 3% in the vagina. As mentioned, drinking hydrogen peroxide can cause a lot of damage to the body and brain. When a concentration over 35% of H2O2 is ingested, it will break down in the body and release a dangerous amount of oxygen gas. If there is more oxygen than can be absorbed by the blood, an embolism (a blockage of an artery) can result.
If you do happen to drink H2O2, it can aggravate the gastrointestinal system. Common symptoms of this include foaming at the mouth, feeling sick to your stomach, belching, and vomiting. If you use a strong enough concentration in your mouth, you may develop burns in this area. If you get enough of this chemical in your stomach, cardiorespiratory arrest can happen after just a few minutes. The intense amount of oxygen gas that forms inside the body can also cause several blockages of blood vessels in the brain. Additionally, if you are drinking H2O2 in hopes of killing yeast or bacteria in your intestines, this is very unlikely. The presence of the enzyme catalase in the digestive system will rapidly break down the hydrogen peroxide; leaving little, if any, to fight any microbial pathogens.
Another study looked at 325 reported exposures to hydrogen peroxide at a poison control center. The research was published in the Journal of Toxicology: Clinical Toxicology [32.6 (1994): 705-714]. This study also confirms that hydrogen peroxide can cause serious toxic effects. Surprisingly, youth under 18 years of age were involved in 71% of these 325 cases; and, the most common way this group was exposed to hydrogen peroxide was through drinking it (83% of these young people drank this chemical). After people drank hydrogen peroxide, the most frequent side effect was vomiting and nausea. The majority of people who were exposed to H2O2 did not have any severe outcome; but, drinking a concentration of this chemical above 10% did correlate with more severe consequences.
