Fungal infections can come in a variety of forms and the symptoms of a fungal infection can changed based on where the infection occurs.  Yeast infections often occur on the skin, on the feet, in the nails, in the vagina, in the intestines, and in the mouth.  Candidemia can also occur which is when yeast has infested the blood of its host.  As you may be able to guess, fungal infections in various parts of the body yield different symptoms.  For example, oral yeast infections will cause white lesions to appear on the inside of the mouth; these lesions can bleed when scrapped.

To better understand how fungal infection symptoms manifest, we will discuss various forms of fungal and yeast infestation.  The infections we will cover include the following forms of fungus  related health maladies:

  • Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis)
  • Ringworm (tinea corporis)
  • Jock Itch (tinea cruris)
  • Vaginal Yeast Infection
  • Oral Thrush (mouth yeast infections)

Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis) Symptoms

Athlete’s foot is a condition that occurs when fungus infects a part of the foot; e.g. the moist areas between your toes.  Athlete’s foot is caused by fungi of the genus Trichophyton and is often transferred to others in moist areas where individuals walk barefoot; e.g. showers and pools.

The symptoms of Athlete’s foot include the following symptoms:

  • Itching between the toes
  • Burning and stinging sensations between the toes
  • Experiencing itching, stinging, or burning sensations on the bottom of the feet
  • Experiencing itchy blisters forming on the feet
  • Having the skin on the feet crack and peel; often this occurs between the toes or on the bottom of the feet
  • Having very dry skin on the soles and sides of the feet

Ringworm (Tinea Corporis) Symptoms

Tinea Corporis

Ringworm is also known as tinea corporis and is quite similar to other fungal infections like athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis).  Ringworm is a superficial infection of fungus of the legs and arms, but it can occur on any body part.  Ringworm of the body is one of several types of ringworm.

The symptoms of ringworm of the body include the following symptoms:

  • A rash that has a circular shape which is red and inflamed at the edge, but looks normal in the middle.
  • A round, flat area of skin that is itchy
  • Expanding rings of red, scaly skin that are slightly raised

Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris) Symptoms

Jock itch happens to affect mainly adult men and adolescent boys.  It gets its name due to the fact that individuals who sweat frequently, such as atheletes, can be affected by this health malady.  The fungus that is responsible for jock itch grows best in warm, wet areas.  The friction of clothes and having moisture in the groin (e.g., from sweating) can create an environment suitable to the growth of fungus.

Jock itch can be contagious and can be transferred via contaminated clothing and direct contact with the infected skin.  Jock itch can also spread to the anus and cause itching and discomfort in the anus.

The symptoms of jock itch include the following symptoms:

  • Developing itching, red skin in the groin, inner thighs, genitals, and butt
  • When jock itch spreads to the anus, you can experience anal itching
  • You may feel burning sensations in the areas affected by the fungus
  • Experiencing peeling, flaking, and cracking skin in the groin area

Vaginal Yeast Infection Symptoms

Candida albicans

Vaginal yeast infections are quite ubiquitous and 3 out of 4 women will develop a yeast infection during the course of their lives.  Some women will even get two or more yeast infections.  Yeast infections of the vagina often cause vaginal irritation and itching along with vaginal discharge.  A yeast infection attacks the vagina and the skin at the entrance to the vagina.

Some symptoms of a yeast infection in the vagina include the following disorders:

  • Experiencing irritation and itching inside the vagina and at vulva (the opening of the vagina).
  • Feeling a burning sensation while you are having intercourse or while you are urinating
  • Having vaginal pain and soreness
  • A white vaginal discharge that has a similar consistency to cottage cheese

Oral Thrush Symptoms

Oral Thrush Symptoms

Oral thrush is caused by a yeast which normally lives in your mouth without causing any adverse health maladies.  The immune system and other types of bacteria that live in the mouth usually keep this yeast from overgrowing and causing oral thrush.  If an opportunity is presented for the yeast to overgrow, e.g. your immune system becomes very weak, the yeast can multiply and cause symptoms of oral thrush.

The following symptoms can occur when your mouth becomes inundated with yeast:

  • Creamy, white lesions that appear on the inside of the mouth; the lesions will often bleed if they are scrapped
  • Having the corners of your mouth crack
  • Not being able to taste
  • Experiencing a cottony feeling in the inside of your mouth
