The first study looked at the antifungal capabilities of both fresh onion and garlic bulb extracts. This research was published in the journal Fitoterapia [77.4 (2006): 321-323]. The liquid extracts were created by the researchers and then reduced into a powder.

There were several different types of Candida the study tested their extracts on. The species of Candida included the following: Candida albicans (18 strains), Candida glabrata (6 strains), Candida tropicalis (5 strains), and Candida parapsilosis (1 strain).

All of the strains of Candida in the study were inhibited by 90% by doses that never exceeded 2 mg / mL of garlic extract. So, clearly, garlic makes a very powerful yeast infection remedy. The geometric mean concentration required to achieve a 90% inhibition of the various yeasts are listed below:

  • Candida albicans — 0.569 mg / mL
  • Candida glabrata — 0.362 mg / mL
  • Candida tropicalis — 0.338 mg / mL
  • Candida parapsilosis — 0.258 mg / mL

Another study also examined the effects of garlic and other herbs on Candida albicans. The study was published in the journal Clinical Biochemistry [44.13 (2011): S339]. The other herbs used in the study included marigold, cinnamon, and thyme.

The garlic and other herbs were all fresh, and they were percolated in a water and alcohol solution. The resulting liquid was then evaporated to various concentrations and tested on Candida albicans. The study found various minimum inhibitory concentrations (amount needed to arrest development) and minimum fungicidal concentrations (amount needed to kill). Cinnamon extract was shown to be the most efficacious of the herbs at killing Candida albicans.

However, the use of alcohol may have altered the Candicidal ability of garlic and the other herbs; possibly enhancing some, while reducing others. The following lethal doses for the various herbs against Candida albicans are as follows:

  • Garlic: 256 mg / mL
  • Cinnamon: 15 mg / mL
  • Marigold: 17 mg / mL
  • Thyme: 31.25 mg / mL

The next study, published in Microbial Ecology in Health and Disease [15.4 (2003): 193-199], looked at how a mixture of L. acidophilus and garlic extract would affect Candida albicans. Concerning the creation of the aqueous extract of garlic, the researchers took 110 grams of fresh garlic and peeled it.

Once peeled, the garlic was pressed through a garlic press into a blender with 100 ml of fluid, and blended. The resulting slurry was filtered, centrifuged, and processed further, and then filter-sterilized. The process to create the aqueous extract did appear involved. And, as a result of the time it took to create their extract, and perhaps other factors; the amount of allicin present in the extract may have been little to none.

This research found that L. acidophilus alone could drastically reduce the amount of Candida albicans in a 24 hour period of time. And, when the garlic extract was added to the L. acidophilus, it only took 4 hours to totally wipe out all Candida albicans. Thus, this study shows it would be prudent to use a probiotic (like L. acidophilus) along with herbal remedies, for perhaps a much better result.

Garlic Breaks Down Candida Biofilm

Candida, like many other microorganisms, can form a thick layer of sludge to cover itself with. This layer of sludge is known as “biofilm;” and, it can lend the yeast cells covered by it, a much greater resistance to prescription antifungal drugs. A study, conducted by Khan, et al. (2012), indicated that biofilm can raise the resistance of Candida to drugs like fluconazole or amphotericin B by 1024 to 2000 times.

Another study, by Chandra, et al. (2001), also showed that biofilm formation could drastically reduce the effectiveness of 4 prescription drugs; a higher dosage might then be required to stop Candida. Fortunately, Chandra’s study also showed that lemongrass essential oil and clove essential oil could both cut through the biofilm and stop the yeast very effectively. Many different strains of Candida are able to develop powerful biofilms; and, this could be one reason you have not seen results using a prescription antifungal or over the counter medication (such products utilize a non-prescription dose of these artificial antifungal drugs).

Thus, garlic is also a great choice to use when you have a yeast infection—as it can reduce the amount of biofilm formed by Candida and attacks biofilm entrenched yeast.

One study, demonstrating how fresh garlic extract could reduce the development of biofilm, was published in the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy [49.1 (2005): 473-473]. The study found that garlic had a very low minimum inhibitory concentration for planktonic (cells not covered with biofilm) Candida.

And, after garlic was allowed just 1 hour of incubation with Candida that was allowed to develop a mature biofilm, there was quite a damaging effect against the biofilm covered yeast. The effect did diminish when the yeast was examined at 48 hours of incubation. The researchers speculated that this was due to the relatively short half life of various chemical components of the garlic.

Allicin, for example, rapidly deteriorates after it is produced by crushing garlic. The study found that garlic does reduce Candida biofilm.

Allicin, a key component of crushed garlic, was also shown to inhibit Candida biofilm in a study published in Phytomedicine 19.1 (2011): 56-63. The study found that allicin suppresses the expression of the hyphal cell wall protein (HPW1) that plays a key role in the early stages of the yeast’s biofilm development.

The study found that allicin worked better than the prescription antifungal fluconazole at stopping biofilm. And, in a dose dependent manner, allicin also helped to reduce the amount of yeast cells developing. The following quote comes from this study and relates the researcher’s findings:

As you may know, many species of Candida (including Candida albicans) grow germ tubes. The proper name for these tendrils is “hyphae.” Those species of Candida that can exist as a single cell (blastoconidia) and as a hyphal tendril, are dimorphic; i.e., they exist in two different forms.

The study found that 80 mg / mL of garlic was enough to radically stop hyphal growth. And, 100 mg / mL of garlic nearly completely stopped cell reproduction. The study concluded by stating that the presence of garlic reduces the expression of a key hyphae associated gene, and stopped the transitioning of the yeast from a single cell into a germ tube.

Allicin in Garlic

Among the primary reasons garlic is an efficacious antifungal, is due to the presence of chemicals like allicin and ajoene. Allicin is a very unstable compound that is formed when two chemicals in fresh garlic, alliin and the enzyme alliinase, are mixed together. Thus, when you crush up a fresh garlic clove, allicin will be created.

But, because the stomach has very acidic fluids, this chemical reaction that creates allicin will be terminated by gastric juices. So, you won’t get this essential chemical forming in your stomach if you eat uncrushed garlic. Many studies have shown that allicin is a key chemical that provides garlic with significant therapeutic potential.

Precautions when Taking Garlic

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, some birth control pills contain the hormone estrogen, which the body naturally breaks down. Is Garlic Dangerous for Vaginal Use?

You may have heard that using garlic in the vagina is a terrible, and dangerous, idea. This thought appears to have been purveyed by one expert who made this claim; many bloggers appeared to have taken up this person’s statements and disseminated it. But, just because one person popularized the idea that garlic is terrible via a tweet or social media post, is this the truth?

I often reference the prominent (late) Dr. James Duke, the world renowned expert of medicinal herbs and plants. Dr. Duke was much more qualified to comment as to the efficacy and safety of herbs than most people. He received his doctorate in botany from the University of North Carolina in 1961. After this he held a prestigious position at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Dr. Duke also traveled the world studying and researching medicinal plants. He was able to put together a vast Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical database. A Positive Case Report of Intravaginal Garlic Use

In 2018, the successful use of garlic as a treatment for a vaginal infection was documented in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine [39 (2018): 97-100]. According to this journal publication, a woman diagnosed with vaginal Ureaplasma sp. Infection, used garlic to successfully treat herself after initially prescribed antibiotics failed to cure her. The case report states the woman experienced no adverse effects.

According to this case report, the woman was 25 years old and was experiencing discomfort after menstruation. The woman reported that right after her menstrual period ended, the outer area of her genitals started itching and a foul odor followed after. After visiting a gynecologist, a laboratory examination of her vaginal microbiological condition diagnosed her with Ureaplasma species infection.

The woman was treated with a 12 consecutive night vaginal dose of capsules containing nystatin, polymyxin B, and neomycin. After the treatment, tests indicated that the infection was not cured; the symptoms of vaginal itching and odor were also still present. The gynecologist prescribed 12 more vaginal capsules of the same chemical drugs.

The woman also reported having a conversation with close members of her family about her problem. The woman’s mother-in-law suggested treating the vaginal infection with garlic instead of the prescribed antibiotics. The woman decided to follow her family member’s advice and used the garlic.

Following her mother-in-law’s instruction, the woman took one clove of garlic (approximately 2.3 cm long and 1.3 cm wide), peeled it off, and made a small cut with a knife on the longer axis of the garlic clove. She then inserted it into her vagina, in a similar fashion as she had done with the prescribed drugs, just before going to bed.

The woman removed the garlic clove from her vagina the next morning; and, she did not insert any more garlic into her vagina in the following days.

The woman was asked to describe her reaction to the garlic treatment. The journal provides the following description:

When we asked for her impressions after insertion of garlic clove, she said that she "felt some minor discomfort in [the] lower part of stomach”, ‘mostly tingling’ and ‘some minor flatulence’." When asked to rank the discomfort on [a] scale from 1 to 10, [the] subject answered with 3. She also stated that there was no redness on her genital organs. The subject also said that some time after insertion of garlic, she felt the taste of garlic in her mouth.

Concerning the results of the garlic treatment, the case study states it successfully cured the Ureaplasma infection quite quickly. The woman was examined a few days after she used the garlic intravaginally and was found to be cured of the infection. The following quote, taken from this journal paper, states this finding:

A couple of days later, another examination from her gynecologist revealed that infection with Ureaplasma spp. was successfully cured. The doctor was not informed of the use of garlic. When asked whether she would apply the garlic again, she answered positively.

The Real Danger of Botulism Poisoning

Like any natural remedy, be it an herb or essential oil, there are dangers with using these treatments. Many herbs are dangerous if used incorrectly; and, it is important to follow an informed, educated protocol for the use of any natural remedy.

Garlic, like all other herbs, does have some dangers; but, it is also to learn how to use this herb safely! Garlic is a food, after all, and has been used by physicians for thousands of years before the advent of modern medicine (Heinerman; 1994).

Simply put, if you insert garlic into the vagina, make sure you use a fresh clove of garlic. And, because botulism is a slight risk (just like it is a slight risk to use garlic in oil at a restaurant—maybe they keep garlic infused oil for a day in the kitchen), you shouldn’t leave garlic in the vagina for an unusual amount of time. Just make sure you do not allow a clove of garlic to stay inside the vagina for more than 12 hours.

And, again, make sure the garlic is fresh when you first use it. All it really takes is common sense.

The Scientific Reality of Botulism Poisoning Risk.

Let’s address the actual risk of botulism poisoning from Garlic.

The first study we will examine was published in the Journal of Food Protection [51.11 (1988): 862-865]. The study took Clostridium botulinum types A and B spores and investigated how they would produce toxin in commercially bottled chopped garlic in soybean oil. The spores were inoculated directly into the jars of garlic, incubated at 35°C, and analyzed every 5th day.

The study appears not to have even examined the inoculated jars of garlic before even 5 days passed. This research shows it takes time in anaerobic conditions for Clostridium botulinum spores to produce toxins.

To further address this, and to see just how much time it takes for vegetables to become unsafe due to Botulinum toxin, let's look at a study that examined this. The study looked at how fast spoiled vegetables inoculated with Clostridium botulinum became toxic due to the production of Botulinum toxin. This study was published in the Journal of Food Protection [61.3 (1998): 324-328].

The study examined the safety of fresh-cut vegetables that were packaged and sealed in regards to Botulinum toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. Onions, rutabaga and butternut squash, fresh packages of stir-fry vegetables, fresh packages of mixed salad, fresh packages of romaine lettuce, and fresh packages of coleslaw were used in the study.

Because sealed packages can lead to aerobic conditions, the study sought to see how these sealed packages became toxic due to Clostridium botulinum. The packages of stir fry and salad had very little oxygen present in them at the start of the test. And, these levels decreased to near zero as time progressed. After 1 day, these saled packages had 5% oxygen and the other package had close to no oxygen present in them.

These vegetables were inoculated with Clostridium botulinum spores and allowed to incubate at various temperatures: 5, 10, 15, and 25°C. The samples were incubated and tested at 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 14, and 21 days.

Since the human body temperature is 37°C, the packages incubated at 25°C are most relevant to our question. All of the vegetables inoculated with Clostridium botulinum spores were not toxic after one day of incubation at 25°C. In fact, the fastest the vegetables became toxic at 25°C was 3 days.

Proteolytic Clostridium botulinum spores at a concentration of 100 spores / gram were found to produce toxic conditions after 3 days of 25°C incubation on butternut squash. That was the fastest time found by this study.

Something more like garlic, onions, were also tested. Proteolytic Clostridium botulinum spores at 1,000 spores / gram did not become toxic at 25°C until 6 days passed.

Thus, we can see as this study shows, it takes time for Botulinum toxin to be produced. It can probably be safely assumed that using a fresh clove of garlic in the vagina for 8 to 10 hours poses little to no danger. This danger should be about the same as eating at a restaurant that stored an oil and garlic mixture for 8 to 10 hours (made in the morning) and used it in the evening. Probably a common practice.

If the garlic is removed, there should not be sufficient time for the toxin to be produced if on the rare occurrence the garlic was contaminated with Clostridium botulinum spores.

Although the human body temperature is warmer than the temperatures used in the 1998 Journal of Food Protection study, it should be easy to assume the results will be approximately comparable.

Ultimately using garlic is up to you. If you are not worried about garlic at a restaurant, it is probably just as dangerous to use it intravaginally overnight as it is eating at a restaurant that uses garlic in oil or other anaerobic conditions.
